Finding Your Way: Navigating Work When There's No Direction

Ever had a job where the policies and procedures are... well, non-existent? Where every task feels like a guessing game and "figure it out" is the default response? It’s frustrating, stressful and downright exhausting.
If you're in this boat, here’s what’s helped me:
✅ Clarify expectations – If leadership isn’t setting clear goals, ask direct questions. What does success look like? What are the priorities?
✅ Document everything – Create your own guidelines as you go. Not only does this help you, but it could benefit future employees. We’ve had to do this in my department as we’ve hired 2 new people within the last 6 months.
✅ Find allies – Connect with coworkers who are also navigating the chaos. Share insights and support each other.
✅ Set boundaries – Without structure, it's easy to get pulled in all directions. Define what you can do and communicate that.
✅ Lead the way – If no one’s setting direction, take the initiative. Propose solutions, establish workflows and bring some order to the madness.
Sometimes it's easier to ask for forgiveness than permission.
But here’s the hard truth—sometimes, despite your best efforts, the chaos never improves. And when that happens, you may need to step back and ask: Is this the right fit for me long term? There's absolutely nothing wrong with seeking out a workplace that values clarity, structure and your well-being.
