Monday means back to work. It also means back to feeling stressed.
But millions of people have a not-so-secret weapon to help combat stress: their furry family companion.
Countless studies have shown that pets can help reduce stress, anxiety and depression.
Here are just a few reasons why having a pet is good for you:
Pets help reduce anxiety. Now more than ever, people are struggling with mental health. Petting your dog or cat for just 10 minutes can lower your blood pressure and increase serotonin and dopamine, the “feel good” chemicals in your brain.
Pets help reduce work-related stress. Employers with pet-friendly policies help attract and retain employees and improve employee satisfaction. Plus, pets remind us to take regular breaks, which can break up the day and help us recharge.
Pets help you be active. Many jobs require sitting for long periods of the day. Walking a dog helps burn calories, improve joint mobility, lowers blood pressure, and gets you outside in the fresh air. Another great benefit of exercise is improved sleep. And who doesn’t want a good night’s rest?
Pets provide companionship. When you have a pet, you’re never alone (some pets, like mine, have no sense of personal space). The presence of a pet provides a constant source of healthy social stimulation. Nothing beats a pet’s enthusiastic greeting every time you come through the door after a long day of work.
Pets teach us about unconditional love. Pets are non-judgmental. They don’t care what you look like, what kind of home you live in or how much money you have. They’re just happy to spend time with you, whether outside playing or just chilling on the couch.
Don’t have a pet or not allowed to have pets where you live? Local shelters and rescues always need volunteers! Many even have programs that allow you to take a dog out on a “play date” for an afternoon. This helps give the animal a much-needed break from the shelter and provides you with some of the same effects as having your own pet.
Depending on where you live, you may also find a local "cat cafe", where you can hang out with some adoptable felines while sipping coffee and giving them treats. Now that sounds like fun!
Win-win!
